Who can be an Illinois Notary?

 

Basic requirements to be a Notary in Illinois:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age;

  • You must be a legal resident of Illinois for at least 30 days;

  • You must be a United States citizen or an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence;

  • You must be able to read and write English;

  • You must not have been convicted of a felony;

  • You must not have had a notary commission revoked; and

  • You must take the oath of office, swearing/affirming that you have read the notary laws and will obey them.

Notaries are public officers appointed and commissioned by the Illinois Secretary of State.  The Notary Public term of office in Illinois is four years.  Notaries are appointed with statewide jurisdiction and may perform official duties anywhere within the state of Illinois. Notaries are not confined to the county in which they reside.
